This was one of the best uni experiences I've had since visiting Japan. It was perfect - buttery, rich, ammonia-less, melt-in-your-mouth yummy. I've heard that California uni can be awesome, and lo and behold - this was amazing. Way better than any I've had in SF so far.
I don't know why I hadn't stopped in at Tamasei before. It's totally cute, papa (the sushi master there) looks like a total Cheech n Chong-style, Japanese-California dude with his wild long hair and crazy mutterings. This place is made complete with hand-written signs up all over the place, and tons of personal attention - Tamasei is where I'm eating sushi this year.
