It's a key indicator about the restaurant, eatery, or cafe in question. Nine times out of ten, if the bread is good, you're in for a treat. You can relax and nosh on the warm loaf while you peruse the menu, and chat with your meal mates.
While I was back in the D.C. area recently, one of my oldest childhood friends suggested we meet for lunch at the Neiman Marcus Cafe in McLean. The bread of choice there is a popover. It's not a fancy popover (cheese or herb encrusted), but it's served warm next to small bowl of strawberry butter.
I recommend getting that strawberry butter inside your popover ASAP. Then, sink your teeth into this billowy, eggy, buttery puff. The golden crust and the soft custardy lining make for a dynamic duo. And the best thing about the popover is that it not only tastes so light and airy, it IS so light and airy -- even with that lip-smackingly delicious strawberry butter.
All in all, a lovely way to kick-off a special girls' lunch.
