I'll admit right up front that I was smarting from a day of touring open-air street markets and the idea of Chinese food in a local restaurant was off-putting (I'd seen a lot of blood and guts and bugs... ) So I splurged at this fancy-smancy place on Nan Luo Gu Xiang, and boy am I glad I did!
Listed on the menu as "Hong Kong-style" lemon chicken, this dish was NOTHING like the gooey, lemon lollipop-flavored dish you find in American Chinese restaurants. In fact, the sauce tasted more orangey than lemony and barely sweet -- so maybe Chinese lemons are more like Meyer lemons that US supermarket lemons.
The chicken was tender, and flavorful, and coated in a panko-like breading before being ever so lightly deepfried and topped with the sauce.
I want to go back for this again before I leave -- and try some other dishes also. According to the menu, the chef has a few Hunan items in his book of tricks.
