This restaurant is a blessing heavensent to an old Tex-patriate like myself. If Artz Rib House and Threadgill's (both in Austin) had a baby it would look and smell a lot like Redbones. Redbones is located in Somerville, Massachusetts smack up against Cambridge and across the river from Boston in the coolest place in the world, Davis Square. Now if they could find away to throw El Azteca (also in Austin) in the mix, I'd swear I'd died and gone to heaven. But, alas, the only TexMex item on the menu is nachos, which I like, but am not inclined to order when dining out. I've had several of the barbecue dishes here and they were all excellent. No, what I want to praise is that they have ambrosia on the menu. I'm talking of course, about Potlikker.
For those of you who don't know, Potlikker is the seasoned broth left over after cooking collard, mustard or turnip greens. It's very nutritious and absolutely delicious. You have some of this with a side order of jalapeno cornbread with sweet butter, a large iced tea and you have reached nirvana. Since there's usually pork of some sort in this, it's not a vegetarian option though it easily could be...
Redbones offers Potlikker as an appetizer or a side. They also have Fried Okra, though I haven't tried it yet. Maybe tonight...
