This sauce is by far the best bar-b-q sauce around. It's kind of sweet so I like to use it as a dipping sauce for potstickers too.
We moved to Texas (Austin) 20 years ago, and we immediately fell in love with the BBQ. Every time guests came to town, we'd drive them out to the Salt Lick for their BBQ inauguration. A short time after we became Texans, a prospective colleague came to town from the NYC area to interview for a job. Of course, we had the Salt Lick on his calendar of events. For some reason long forgotten, he decided to follow us to the restaurant. Well, we drove, and drove, and drove (he could have crossed several states in his home neighborhood if he drove that far up there). When he arrived, he was indeed impressed. The first words from his mouth , however, were "I didn't know I needed a Trip-Tik and an oil change to make this journey"! He took the job and has been eating at the Salt Lick ever since. He likes the BBQ sauce, too!
This sauce is unique. It is more like bbq gravy. It is thick and you can really feel it in the back of your throat. In fact, I sometimes have theorized that it is infused with some chemical that is physically addictive and expands in your stomach so that you can't go overboard on the all-you-can-eat deal. In any event, it IS delicious and special. You must try it.
Normally, I wouldn't mention sauces or side dishes, but this sauce is unique. It's without doubt the best bbq sauce on the planet. Most of the food at Salt Lick is average to above average bbq, but the sauce is spectacular. Consider the "family style" meal as a vehicle to consume the sauce. This entry is probably a layup for anyone familiar with central Texas bbq, but I thought that I'd list it for bbq lovers not familiar with this area.
