Screaming Orgasm at Tomo Sushi

4101 W Parmer Ln Ste E, Austin, TX, 78727
(512) 821-9472

The “Screaming Orgasm” ($13), a moan-worthy sashimi salad of clean-tasting yellowtail, shredded daikon radish, and a spicy, creamy ponzu dressing. This restaurant is a hidden gem--the chefs actually cooked at Nobu in Vegas. Sin City's loss is Austin's gain.

Eggplant Pizza at Home Slice Pizza

My favorite combination is anchovy and fresh tomato--ask for it cooked on the crispy side, and partner it with the baby spinach and chickpea salad.

Pad Thai with Chicken at Madam Mam's Noodles & More

2514 Guadalupe St, Austin, TX
(512) 472-8306

Although there are more colorful, aromatic versions of pad thai out there (with more vegetables and fresh herbs), Madam Mam's hits the spot when you're craving a tangle of sticky noodles and cool, crisp bean sprouts. I love the chicken variation--the meat is moist and full of flavor. Call me a sucker for all the colorful umbrellas and groovy patio furniture, but this dish always tastes best at the Westgate location.

Puffy Tacos at VIVO Cocina Texicana

2015 Manor Rd, Austin, TX
(512) 482-0300

If you haven’t had puffy tacos, the delicate and crackly shells of raw (not griddled) masa tortillas that have been deep-fried until crisp and delicate, before being wrapped around a filling, you’d best get on it. You’d be wise to initiate yourself at Vivo’s, the convivial Tex-Mex spot on Manor Road’s ever-growing restaurant row, where they are the especialidad de la casa. An order of Puffy Tacos ($8.95) includes two homemade tortillas (fried until puffy, of course), with choice of filling (we love the spicy beef picadillo and moist shredded chicken), along with brown rice and beans, and lettuce, tomato, and cheese. What’s more, ladies are presented with a flower when they leave. When’s the last time you received one of those on a dinner date…hmmm?

Ham & Cheese Crepes at Flip Happy

2041 S Lamar Blvd, Austin, TX, 78704

This silver airstream trailer serves up an inexpensive and satisfying taste of France. Love the rich and gooey and ham and cheese crepe, but the dessert variations are just as alluring.
