I know this fry has a loyal following and I genuinely wanted to like it.... but my reaction was "bleah".

These are hand-made flautas (chicken) and very good. I recommend ordering the Lorraine's Queso (which has ground meat in it, though there is also a regular queso option) to spoon over them. The glasses of ice tea are huge, but your waitstaff is none-the-less attentive and very pleasant.

This is one of my family's top eateries in Abilene and my husband orders this dish every single time he goes. It is a bean burrito with a spicy carne guisada topping and lots of cheese. Their rice is excellent - my favorite spanish rice of any Mexican restaurant. The salsa is very hot. For the meeker among us (myself included) you might want to opt for the Lorraine's Queso to dip your chips. The restaurant is very cheap and you see bankers and oil men and other "Abilene elite" eating there all the time. In other words, those who could afford to pay much more come here regularly because the food is SO GOOD. Don't miss it!

A lot of places claim it, but this truly is the best cheeseburger in the state. There are also Storm's in Marble Falls, Burnet, Lampasas, and Hamilton. They started off as drive-ins and are family owned (for decades now). This is the newest and biggest. Instead of a drive-in feel, this location is more open and spacious. As it is right on the lake and features a large dock, you can actually "drive-in" with your boat. The staff is very nice. One very hot 4th of July a group of friends and I spent the afternoon playing cards there after we enjoyed our lunch, soaking in the air conditioning and escaping the heat of the State Park where we had brilliantly decided to tent camp (i.e. roast ourselves). No one ran us out and it stands as one of my most pleasant memories of the hill country.

A lot of places claim it, but this truly is the best cheeseburger in the state. Drive-in style, family establishment with an interesting history (apparently Elvis used to frequent there when he was stationed in Texas in the military). There are also Storm's in Marble Falls, Kingsland (particularly nice - right on the lake), Lampasas, and Hamilton.
