Normally, I wouldn't mention sauces or side dishes, but this sauce is unique. It's without doubt the best bbq sauce on the planet. Most of the food at Salt Lick is average to above average bbq, but the sauce is spectacular. Consider the "family style" meal as a vehicle to consume the sauce. This entry is probably a layup for anyone familiar with central Texas bbq, but I thought that I'd list it for bbq lovers not familiar with this area.

This place just opened in 2007 and is a 'high end' bbq place downtown by City Hall. Normally, the lack of butcher paper and crappy old tables is a bad sign, but I thought I'd give it a try anyway. Glad I did. The boar ribs are on the appetizer menu and they absolutely kick ass! They cost about $10, but you get a lot of food. Totally worth it. I normally find any wild meat a little 'gamey' tasting, but they knocked this out of the park. I almost gave it a dishola, but I don't toss those out too often. Anyway, I like what I'm seeing in this place and the lunch menu is more affordable if that's an issue. Bottom line, these guys can cook. Side note: the sauces were average. They have regular, hot, and mustard sauces that they bring to the table. Good, not great. Great being Salt Lick sauce. Crapola being Rudy's sauce for a reference of my taste in sauce.

Beef ribs can be hit or miss, but Artz Rib House seems to come through every time. Most of their bbq is solid, but the beef ribs are spectacular. Tender and flavorful every time. It's a can't miss. I would rate them the best beef ribs in Austin. Iron Works was neck and neck with Artz for a while, but they have fallen off in the last few years to about a 6.5. If you're looking for great beef ribs try Artz. Honorable mention on the beef ribs: Salt Lick (8).

Ok, normally I only discuss bbq, but this is a justified exception. I rarely eat at fast food places, but I had a dessert the other day that was out of this world. If you are remotely concerned about caloric intake, avoid this at all costs. They call it a Concrete. It's similar to a DQ Blizzard or whatever Sonic calls their ice cream smoothie, but there's a litte twist. It's custard, not ice cream, so more fat, sugar, creme, and taste. I recommend ordering a la carte. They have vanilla and chocolate and then you add whatever ingredients you want. I like a modified Rocky Road. I use vanilla custard then add in pecans, chocolate chunks, and marshmellow (syrup). This is guaranteed to put you in a food coma. It's simple, easy, fast, cheap and convenient. You can't always have cobbler or bannana pudding.

Arrtz serves traditional pork ribs, but they also offer a unique cut called 'country style' pork ribs. If you eat Q 4-5 times a week like me, it's always enjoyable to try a new approach. I've had them 3 times and they've always been a solid winner. It's not a life changing event (like the first time I had Salt Lick sauce), but I highly recommend giving them a try. Side note: if you're more of the beef rib type, Artz has fantastic beef ribs. Overall, the beef ribs are better than the pork ribs (traditional or country style), but if you're looking to try something new, the country style pork ribs are solid.
