We brought my Dad here on Father's Day - a perfectly gorgeous Virginia day. Hunter's Head is one of my favorite places to eat (and drink) when I'm in Middleburg/Upperville, Virginia. You've gotta love the eatery's name; in the heart of fox-hunting country, you're eating at an old English-like pub with pasty hunter's heads hung along the walls (see photo). The food is generally solid, and sometimes it even shines. This time, I ordered a salmon and bacon sandwich with thick-cut fries. Maybe a little too generous with the mayo, but who could complain? We sat outside on the sun-drenched patio, drank wine, laughed, and caught up with our Dad all afternoon.

As my dear friend Christy says, this is "only the most delicious BLT on the planet." She should know. She used to live right across the street from Zazie's on Cole Street, and had ample opportunity to try this American classic numerous times. When she introduced me to this dish, it made me want to move to San Francisco all over again. The sour dough tastes like it's baked fresh every day, then gently toasted. The mayo - so rich and creamy, it MUST be homemade. Could the bacon have been apple wood-smoked, then cooked to a dreamy crispness? Very likely. And what a delightful riff on the "L" and the "T" of the BLT; grilled tomatoes served with tangy fresh greens and big dollops of silky goat cheese. No wonder Zazie has a near-constant line starting at its front door, and snaking down Cole Street!

I grew up eating this dish almost weekly. This is one of the most famous dish from my town and there is a good reason behind it. This is a noodle dish that comes with a whole bunch of stuff. You get white meat, Chinese style bbq pork, pork dumpling and usually friend wontons. It comes with the soup on the side and you can actually order fish balls as a side dish in addition to the dish. The sweet bbq pork, the tender and fresh white meat combined with the tasty pork dumpling makes this dish one hell of a dish that you gotta try. In addition to that, the texture and taste of the handmade noodle when mixed with the clear chicken broth soup is just to die for.

This thing is basically breakfast on a salad! It's incredible. It's an enormous salad with tomatoes, olives and 'bacon' (lardons--kind of like bacon cubes) and right on top there are two fried eggs, deliciously thin sliced smoked ham, and then the whole thing is topped with gobs of garlicky fried potatoes. It's amazing! And at 11 euros it's a steal. There are also many variations of the salad...with salmon, with foie gras, with goat cheese, with roquefort. It's a great place to stop after climbing the hill up to Sacre Coeur. And the wine by the carafe is cheap!

70 degrees outside. Courtyard to ourselves, sipping candied ginger cocktails. Hi, Napa. I think I love you. And you must be fond of me too - just look at that gnocchi! Light, fluffy and bite sized. Accented with crisp spring fava beans, shaved parm & garlic scrapes. Doesn't get much better. I found out afterwards the restaurant is owned by MIchael Chiarello. Always found him to be a bit cocky. He's allowed. Everything we sampled was excellent.
