BANANA SPRING ROLLS at P.F. Chang's China Bistro

925 Blossom Hill Rd, San Jose, CA, 95123
(408) 960-2940

As the menu at P.F. Chang's reads, this dessert is comprised of "Six warm, crispy bites with coconut pineapple ice cream and drizzled with caramel and vanilla sauces." This is pretty and tasty food – and you’ll find the same at every P.F. Chang's location: pretty, tasty food; pretty décor, and strangely snobby servers.

Grilled Tomatoes & Mushrooms, Fried Eggs, English Bacon & Bubble & Squeak at The Quality Chop House

94 Farringdon Rd, Islington, GB
020 7837 5093

The Quality Chop House has been open at 94 Farringdon Road since the late 1870's. The decor hasn't changed much over the decades, but the food served today is a modern take on traditional British classics. The restaurant's breakfasts are spectacular -- with a Full English-style platter of grilled tomatoes, mushrooms, eggs, bacon and Bubble & Squeak pictured here. Bubble & Squeak is an old English dish that consisted of fried meat and cabbage -- typically leftovers from yesterday's roast beef. The version at Quality Chop House, and that served in many modern restaurants, omits the meat and features mashed potatoes spiked with spinach. The silly name for the dish is cited as a reference to the sounds emitting from a hot frying pan as the moist mixture 'bubbles and squeaks.'

Chocolate empañada-style pastry filled with caramel and toasted nuts at Izote

Av. Presidente Masaryk 513, Mexico City, MX
(504) 588-2123

Izote de Patricia Quintana is located in Mexico City's answer to Beverly Hills (Polanco). The swanky location is far from the historic city center, but the food is well worth the price of a thirty-minute cab ride. (If you hit one or two of the nearby (upscale) bars, you can make a night of it.) Every one of Chef Quintana's modern takes on old-fashioned, regional Mexican cuisine are exciting. The highlight of our tremendous meal was this dessert of vanilla bean-flavored ice cream and an empañada-style pastry filled with caramel and toasted nuts. The pastry was incredible -- light, flaky and flavorful, and most certainly made with copious amounts of lard. If I could eat just one more dessert in this lifetime, I'd have to seriously contemplate booking a flight back to Mexico City! Dishola editorial

Breakfast Buffet at L ECHANSON

2-9-4 Ginza Chuo-ku, Tokyo, JP
(+81)3/43351111

The Hotel Mercure in Tokyo's Ginza district offers a wonderful breakfast buffet featuring everything from smoked fish to freshly squeezed grapefruit juice. The sausage offerings are just about the best little porkers I have ever eaten. The dining room’s ambiance is nothing fancy, but for the equivalent of about $20 US you can try tasty Japanese breakfast items including Miso soup and pickles as well as exquisitely flaky French-style puff pastries and croissants.

GAI GRA PAO at Krung Thai Restaurant

640 S Winchester Blvd, San Jose, CA
(408) 260-8224

Gai Gra Pao (aka basil chicken with chili and garlic) at Krung Thai is just one of this restaurant’s many wonderful dishes. I order the dish for take-out more than for dine-in: Krung Thai is so popular that dozens of people often wait in line for a table. If you dine-in at lunch, this hot and spicy menu item is served with a big pile of white rice, a crunchy spring roll and fried wonton. It’s one of the best tasting/priced lunch offerings in Silicon Valley.
