This is my first experience with Yunnan food and I LOVED it! The chicken is well spiced on its own, but it comes with a little dish of additional hot red pepper spice and a fresh fruit (plum?) sauce. And yes, the chicken arrived with its head still on. I ordered the chicken with roasted leeks and papaya wine (30 proof!). A great combination in a cute restaurant with very nice staff who wear what must be regional Yunnan-style clothing. (English language menu with pictures available.)

I'll admit right up front that I was smarting from a day of touring open-air street markets and the idea of Chinese food in a local restaurant was off-putting (I'd seen a lot of blood and guts and bugs... ) So I splurged at this fancy-smancy place on Nan Luo Gu Xiang, and boy am I glad I did! Listed on the menu as "Hong Kong-style" lemon chicken, this dish was NOTHING like the gooey, lemon lollipop-flavored dish you find in American Chinese restaurants. In fact, the sauce tasted more orangey than lemony and barely sweet -- so maybe Chinese lemons are more like Meyer lemons that US supermarket lemons. The chicken was tender, and flavorful, and coated in a panko-like breading before being ever so lightly deepfried and topped with the sauce. I want to go back for this again before I leave -- and try some other dishes also. According to the menu, the chef has a few Hunan items in his book of tricks.

It was a rainy Sunday morning and this place was just across the street from my B&B on Nanluoguxiang in Beijing's Dongcheng District. The tube was tuned to the Olympics and there was a free table, so I thought, "what the heck." I probably should have waited for another place to open, because although this was filling (and I was really hungry), it wasn't great. The half a tomato had a weird, tiney taste and the fried egg was just way overcooked. I ate the toast, canned mushrooms and beans, sausages and a slice of bacon and that was it. Oh, and there was no H-P sauce ;-)

Excellent airport food -- who'd a thunk it possible? Pesto sauce, cheese and ham-laced egg omelet with home fried potatoes.

Pizza in Beijing? Yep, and it was really good -- in a California Pizza Kitchen/Wolfgang Puck kinda way. They use canned jalapeno pepper strips, chunks of fresh bell peppers and a mild white cheese. Raw peanuts are sprinkled on top. The crust seems to have shortening in it -- it's flakey and kind of pie-dough-ish. I'd eat this again gladly -- and probably will since I'm staying a block away for a couple weeks.
