One of my favorite bakeries in the world makes one of my favorite foods in the world: Baked Char Siu Baau! The baau is a soft, mildly-sweet yeast dough filled with savory Char Siu (Chinese-style barbecued pork). How lucky am I that this location is about a five minute drive from my office!

Hop Woo's roast Peking-style duck wasn't bad, but it wasn't as good as what I can get at just about any San Francisco Chinatown spot (especially R&G Lounge). The skin wasn't crispy and the meat approaching dry -- not the succulent hunks of flesh I had expected. I chose Hop Woo due to its proximity to my hotel -- and a few online recommendations. However, I wouldn’t go out of my way to dine there again.

The Fish Market is one of those casual local spots that you can count on for good quality food prepared in ways that just about any diner is comfortable with. The ambiance is on the level of The Olive Garden (albeit with a fishier theme), and the servers are anything but pretentious, but if you like fresh fish, and a wide variety to choose from, The Fish Market is a nice choice. As shown in the photograph, this restaurant offers a wonderful lunch time sandwich stuffed with local Dungeness crab, perfectly ripe avocado, tomato and bacon served on a grilled Ciabatta roll. The simple side salad of cucumber marinated in lemon juice and fresh dill weed is an excellent accompaniment.

El Paseo Inn serves good (not great) Mexican-American style food served in a colorful and entertaining atmosphere. The patio seating is located right on historic Olvera Street -- so strolling musicians will serenade you (for a gratuity) and you can shop for trinkets after your meal. You'll also pay twice the price you would at most other SoCal Mexican joints. Nevertheless, the food is filling and tasty (with the exception of a basketful of stale tortilla chips).

A few simple ingredients -- good quality dry noodles, soy sauce, bean sprouts, a few scallions -- and viola! You've got a soul-satisfying mound of comfort food. This is the best tasting chow mein I've had in years -- and certainly the best example of what a talented chef can do with very little. Probably the most remarkable difference between this chow mein and what you find in any other American Chinese joint is the impressive lack of grease/oil. The only negative thing I can possibly say about this dish is that the price, $8.50, is astonishingly high for an order of vegetarian chow mein. I guess the fact that I'm ready to go back and pay twice the price for a second plate full is telling ;-)
