Excellent fried chicken, collard greens, creamy macaroni & cheese, a tiny helping of mashed potatoes with cream gravy, AND ice berg lettuce salad with "Bleu" cheese dressing! There's something wrong if you're not yet standing up to sing the American anthem....

The restaurant is a hoot -- Americana at its ticky-tacky best (or worst). If you're a glutton, you can sit at a special table on a stage and attempt to consume 72oz of steak -- and if you do so, your meal is free [http://www.bigtexan.com/72ozlive.php]. You're on your own for the future cardiology fees... Prime rib with horseradish is one of my all time favorites -- but other than the portion size at The Big Texan, this wasn't the best cut I've ever been served. For the price ($12.99) this was a good meal -- and I sure didn't swagger away hungry. Question: Are you really supposed to eat the raw jalapeño pepper??

The best pancakes I've had in years -- and the Velvet's specialty made with real oatmeal and buttermilk. (Add a side of ham, bacon, sausage, or linguisa for only $2.19.) Good coffee also, as you'd expect from a classic American diner/coffee shop.

A meal at Menara Moroccan is about much more than food. The decor is something out of Disney's Aladdin: a central fountain symbolizing an oasis, pillowed couches, mirrored fabrics and long-necked tea pots… As if all this beautiful decor wasn’t enough, there’s an hourly floor show featuring traditional belly dancers and quite decent food. The dishes aren’t as high quality as you’ll find in Paris or London (sites of my only other experiences with the cuisine), but they are tasty, and a good introduction to the sweet/savory flavor combinations of Moroccan food. Shown in the photo: Lham Mrhosia (Lamb with Honey) and Couscous aux Legumes (Vegetable Couscous).

For one diner, this would probably be an overwhelming appetizer, but it is perfect when passed around the table for each guest to take just a bite or two. Warm roasted figs are studded with bacon chunks and topped with hunks of earthy Humboldt Fog Blue Cheese. A drizzle of tart balsamic vinegar glaze keeps the richness of the ingredients in check.
