One of my favorite Caesars in Austin, the one at Enoteca comes with fresh shaved Parmesan, lightly dressed Romaine lettuce leaves, fresh lemon, and a a couple of anchovies on top. Oh, and how can I forget the fresh focaccia bread crumbs? They are lip-smackingly good!

Shochu & Grapefruit juice at Matsugen

New York Times Food critic Frank Bruni recommended this drink, and I am glad we tried it! Shochu is a Japanese alcoholic beverage, most commonly distilled from barley, sweet potato or rice. Typically it is 25% alcohol by volume, making it weaker than whisky, but stronger than wine and sake. At Matsugen, the bartender mixes shochu with fresh squeezed grapefruit juice and (as my savvy NYC sister pointed out, "hand-cracked ice") to create a cocktail that is light and sparkly. Bruni says it's "sunny singing taste isn't gimmicky." We'll have another round, please.

Deep Fried Shrimp Cake and Shiitake Mushroom at Matsugen

This appetizer of fried shrimp cakes and shiitake mushrooms was a hit with my tablemates. For $18 though (one bite each) I'm not sure I'd order it again. However, it was a lovely starter -- the shrimp cakes had a wonderful crunch to them, and I'm not sure I've ever tasted more flavorful shiitakes. Then again, things do tend to taste better when deep fried.

Turkey Pesto Panini at Central Market - West Gate

Central Market fails to disappoint, and this panini from their cafe is a case in point. Fresh smoked turkey breast layered atop Havarti cheese, thin slices of tomato, lettuce, and a generous pesto spread makes for a perfect lunch. The pressed bread tastes fresh and crunchy. The sandwich comes with your choice of fries, fruit, or a green salad, and though it is the least healthy option, I must recommend CM's fries - they are crisp and delicious!
