The signature Hungarian gulyas at this Old World Bistro both satisfies and heartens. Tender prime beef tips fall apart with the touch of your fork. Unadorned homemade spatzle is a simple yet ideal accompaniment. This is comfort food Eastern European style. Next stop, Budapest.

Imagine an Italian sub-sandwich without the bread, and you get a pretty good picture of what this hearty salad is like at NoRTH. As its title implies, it involves a little of everything in the house: chopped salad, tomato, toasted pine nuts, goat cheese, salami, ham, and provolone cheese. The dressing tastes like a simple oil-vinegar combo, which is nice because the salad already has a lot going on. I like to think of this salad as a Subway-Sammy-Luxe.

NoRTH has taken the Hawaiian pizza up a notch in this lovely creation. This is a light, thin crust pizza that almost has a dessert feeling thanks to the addition of the sweet, fruity figs. The menu says they are "marinated," but if so, I'm not sure in what. They tasted like pure, luscious figs to me. My husband wasn't as fond of them as I was, but I do think he appreciated the idea of the sweet-salty (prosciutto) combination.

Okay, I know it's not a dish per se, but sometimes coffee (especially a rich, creamy latte with whole milk) can fill you up. I had to read a 225 page manuscript in one sitting a few evenings ago, and I must tell you that this little cup of Jo kept me going all night. Cafe Medici's beans - roasted especially for Medici - pack some punch. The excellent barista informed me that the beans, roasted in Spring, Texas, are actually a combination of six varieties: Ethiopian, Panamanian, Brazilian, Colombian, Guatemalan, and Costa Rican. And even if you're not a coffee aficionado, how can you resist the beautiful presentation?

If you love tofu, you'll thoroughly enjoy this dish. I like tofu, but I enjoy it most when it has been marinaded and imbued with flavor. Uchi's Age Dofu is pure, light, and creamy - yet, in my opinion, it lacks any real punch. It is lightly fried, which adds a nice crisp texture, and the dashi broth with which it is served is pleasant enough (sprinkled with bonito shavings), but this is a dish for tofu purists.
