When a chef owns up to a favorite dish on his or her menu, you know it's worth a try. Rumor has it that one of the current chef picks at Lambert's is the fried green tomato appetizer. After sampling a plate (a meal in itself, by the way), you'll understand why. Three thick slices of fresh green tomatoes are dipped in buttermilk and seasoned flour, then salted hot out of the fryer. Sound good? A flourish of sharp mizuna greens (Japanese arugula) balance on top of the tomatoes, and elevate the plate from, well...fried green tomatoes to a gourmand's delight. But wait, it gets even better. Atop the greens, you'll find a generous serving of jumbo lump crab meat mixed with a touch of mayo, celery, red onion, parsley and grain mustard. Garlic-infused "Green Goddess" dressing tie all of the elements together. Think southern hospitality meets Asian sophistication. You've gotta love food fusion.

Turn your head or blink an eye, and your stack of flatbread could, quite literally, disappear. Blame it on your dinner mates, who know a good thing when they taste one. After all, what's not to like about salty Serrano ham, warm Manchego cheese, and the crunch of a fine flatbread underneath? But if truth be told, it's really the white truffle oil that draws diners to this plate like moths to light. That gorgeous, seductive white truffle oil that elevates many a plate from good to great. The steep price ($10) for such a small taste of Tuscany is the only element that prevents me from awarding this dish The Dishola!

This is some of the best queso in Austin, Texas - and that's saying a lot. We suspect the cheesy delight is made from a variety of real Mexican cheeses (as opposed to the Velveeta-type quesos served at some establishments), but it probably consists primarily of Chihuahua, since this chile con queso hails from the state of Chihuahua.
The cheese is interspersed with silky ribbons of roasted chile, and is dotted with chopped tomato, cilantro, and bits of crunchy tortilla chips on top.
If you like cheese...bueno, what can we say? Head to Fonda, and order their chile con queso. We dare you not to eat the whole bowl.

My Mom has a saying when something really great happens to her: "God blew me a kiss."
That's how I felt when I took one bite of Fonda San Miguel's crepas de cajeta. (For the uninitiated, cajeta is the Mexican version of dulce de leche, made of sweetened, caramelized milk).
The crepes themselves are feathery - light, airy and melt-in-your mouth delicate. But it is the homemade cajeta that steals the limelight. It is rich, buttery and caramelized all at once. And just when you don't think your taste buds can handle all of the stimulation, a cold creamy caramel ice cream races to the rescue.
A perfect 10 - the "Dishola" - to the Crepas? Pues, claro que si!

I love these 3-4 bite tostadas. They are a wonderful appetizer to enjoy and share with your table mates, particularly when you pair them with a cold Michelada, or a tart margarita on the rocks. The crunchy fried tortilla is topped with your choice of shredded chicken, avocado, or cochinita pibil. I always ask our server to substitute one extra cochinita pibil for the avocado (somewhat lacking in flavor compared to the other two options). Topped with a thin layer of black beans, shredded lettuce, tangy pickled onions, and julienned radishes, these towering tostadas offer you some of the best of Mexico - all in one bite.
